Understanding Roofing Warranties

Every shingle manufacturer offers a warranty, and most of them sound great on paper. But the details matter, and there are some things you should know before you assume you are covered.

Manufacturer warranty vs. workmanship warranty.

The manufacturer warranty covers defects in the shingle itself. If the shingles fail prematurely due to a manufacturing problem, the manufacturer will cover materials. But here is the catch: they rarely cover labour. So you might get free shingles, but you are still paying someone to tear off the old roof and install the new ones.

A workmanship warranty comes from your roofer and covers the installation. If something fails because it was installed incorrectly, the roofer comes back and fixes it. We stand behind our work and we have been here for over 15 years, which matters because a warranty is only as good as the company behind it.

Prorated vs. non-prorated.

Many manufacturer warranties are prorated after a certain period. A "30-year" warranty might be non-prorated for the first 10 years and prorated after that. In year 20, you might only get 30 percent of the original value. Read the fine print.

What voids a warranty.

Poor ventilation is the big one. If your attic is not properly ventilated, most manufacturers will void the warranty entirely. Improper installation, unauthorized repairs, and pressure washing can also void coverage. We make sure every installation meets or exceeds manufacturer requirements so your warranty stays intact.

Our recommendation.

Do not choose your roofer based on who offers the longest warranty. Choose based on reputation, workmanship quality, and how long they have been in business. A 50-year warranty from a company that folds in three years is worth nothing.
