Frequently Asked Questions

Straightforward answers to the roofing questions we hear most often from homeowners across the Waterloo Region.

Do I need a new roof?

Sooner or later, every roof needs to be replaced. If it is old and worn, limited repairs will not help. Signs of a weathered roof include excessive loss of protective mineral granules, cracked, curled, or missing shingles, and visible leaks in the attic. If your standard shingle roof is more than 20 years old, it is a prime candidate for re-roofing. You can inspect from the ground with binoculars. Walking on the roof is dangerous and can damage shingles.

How long should my roof last?

Most asphalt shingles are designed to last between 20 and 30 years or longer. In Canada, with our freeze-thaw cycles and temperature swings, actual shingle life will be lower than the rated number. A 30-year shingle will still outlast a 20-year, but do not expect to hit the full number. Poor ventilation also shortens shingle life significantly. We can assess your ventilation and recommend improvements to help your roof last as long as possible.

What maintenance does my roof require?

A well-chosen roof needs only minimal maintenance. Keep gutters, downspouts, and roof surfaces clear of leaves and debris so water drains freely. Never let a downspout pour directly onto a lower roof section. Keep tree branches trimmed back from the roof. Do not walk on roofing. Have the roof inspected once a year, and repair any damage as soon as you find it.

What types of roof coverings are available?

Options include asphalt shingles, roll roofing, concrete and ceramic tiles, slate, wood shingles and shakes, metal roofing, built-up roofing, and single-ply systems. Asphalt shingles are the most widely used for residential homes because they are economical, durable, and attractive. The newer multi-layered architectural shingles give a bold, textured look and last longer than standard three-tab shingles.

What colour shingle should I choose?

Your roof is the first thing visitors see. Lighter colours make a home feel taller and more open. Darker colours help a steep or tall roof feel more grounded. The most important thing is that your shingle colour works with your existing siding, brick, and trim. We can bring colour samples to your home so you can see how they look against your actual exterior.

How can I protect my roof from ice dams?

Ice dams form when attic heat melts snow on the roof, and the water refreezes at the cooler eaves. The buildup forces water underneath shingles and into your home. The solution is proper ice and water shield underlayment at the eaves, in valleys, and around chimneys and skylights. Combined with adequate attic ventilation and insulation, this keeps your roof protected through the worst Canadian winters.
