Choosing the Right Shingle Colour for Your Home

Your roof takes up a huge amount of visual real estate on your home. Pick the wrong colour and the whole exterior feels off. Pick the right one and it ties everything together.

Start with your fixed elements.

Your brick, stone, or siding is not changing. Your front door, trim, and shutters are easy to repaint. But the walls and masonry are what they are. Lay out your shingle samples next to your actual exterior materials, outside in natural light. Colours look completely different under showroom fluorescents.

Light vs. dark.

Lighter shingles make a low or small house feel taller and more open. Darker shingles help a tall, steep-roofed house feel more grounded and proportional. If you have a standard two-storey with a moderate pitch, you have more flexibility.

Earth tones are popular for a reason.

In our area, the most popular choices are weathered wood, charcoal, and slate grey. They work with most brick and siding colours and they age well. If you want something bolder, it can work, but make sure you are committing to it for the next 25 to 30 years.

Watch out for HOA or municipal rules.

Some neighbourhoods have restrictions on roofing colours. Check before you order.

We bring samples to you.

We carry samples from the major manufacturers and we will come to your house so you can see the options against your actual exterior. It takes 15 minutes and it saves a lot of second-guessing.
